Oversight of Remedial Investigation Activities - Wanaque, NJ

JM Sorge, Inc (JMS) was retained by the Borough of Wanaque to determine if the remedial investigation being conducted at the US Aluminum, Inc. (USAI) site would ensure that when the Borough purchased the site, all environmental issues would be properly addressed. JMS was tasked with evaluating the current investigation results, inspecting the site, and conducting additional investigations as necessary to meet the Borough’s objectives.

The USAI site was undergoing a remedial investigation under the NJDEP ISRA program. Prior to any site inspection, JMS conducted a file review under the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) Open Public Records Act (OPRA) to review past reporting and information on the areas of concern (AOCs) at the site.

Following the OPRA review, JMS conducted an inspection of the interior and exterior of the existing buildings, the AOCs previously identified, and all portions of the surrounding grounds. During the inspection, a series of additional AOCs were identified which required investigation. Areas identified included drywells, sumps, and various current or former site drainage features. After a series of meetings and negotiations, the consultant for USAI completed the additional sampling recommended by JMS at these AOCs. These investigations identified additional contaminated areas, which were subsequently included in the site remediation plan approved by NJDEP.

Because of these additional environmental issues identified with the site, the Borough retained JMS as their Oversight Environmental Consultant to supervise the remedial activities and to evaluate the work plans and reporting for the project.
