HISTORIC PESTICIDES

New Jersey

JMS was retained to conduct a remedial investigation of a 24-acre parcel of land. The parcel has been actively farmed since 1808 and has been used as an apple and peach orchard for at least the past 50 to 60 years based on our review of aerial photographs and other information.

Issues

  • Determine if there is a residual effect from the historical orchard farming operation conducted on the site over the past century.
  • Dieldrin was confined primarily to the upper 6 inches of soil with minor exceptions, and arsenic levels of concern were generally confined to the upper foot of soil except in areas where the soil was previously reworked during orchard replacement.

Solutions

  • JMS collected soil samples from a total of 135 grid locations located across the entire 24 acre tract. A combination of surface and deeper samples were collected during three (3) sampling episodes to complete the residual pesticide delineation on the site. A total of 180 samples were analyzed for the presence of pesticides. The results confirmed that dieldrin and arsenic are the primary residual compounds of concern on the site.
  • Proposed a soil blending remedial strategy as part of a pilot remediation program to be conducted to confirm that the residential protection standards will be achieved using this approach. The pilot study will be completed on a minimum of one-half acre of the site with subsequent detailed sampling to verify that the remedy meets the residential protection standards.
