UNDERGROUND STORAGE TANK REMEDIATION

Hillside, New Jersey

JMS was retained to remove three USTs located around an industrial building in Hillside, New Jersey. An investigation by a prospective purchaser confirmed that gasoline contamination was present beneath the site. Tank removal was completed following back registration of the tanks and necessary NJDEP tank closure approvals were obtained. JMS removed the tanks and determined that gasoline residuals extended to significant depths and could not be removed without jeopardizing the building structure. Since the building was slated for demolition, JMS coordinated with NJDEP to defer the final remediation until the building was removed.

Soil contamination was found to extend to depths of approximately 20 feet beneath two of the former tanks. Affected soil was excavated and removed for offsite disposal. Post excavation soil sampling confirmed that soil remediation was completed in accordance with Technical Requirements for Site Remediation (TRSR). The NJDEP reviewed the results and determined that a groundwater investigation was required due to the depth of the soil contamination at the site.

JMS installed a series of permitted monitoring wells on the site. The analysis of the samples obtained from the wells confirmed that groundwater had not been adversely affected by the soil contamination. Therefore, JMS recommended that the NJDEP grant a No Further Action (NFA) approval for this site. The NJDEP approved the NFA and Covenant Not to Sue (CNS) for the site and the case was closed.
