Diesel Fuel Release Remediation - Piscataway, NJ

JMS was retained by Foley, Inc. under the Licensed Site Remediation Professional Program (LSRP) to conduct investigative and remedial activities to address a diesel fuel oil spill that occurred at their Piscataway facility. Remedial activities for the release were conducted under the oversight of Mr. Joseph Sorge, LSRP in accordance with the Site Remediation Reform Act (SRRA).

The Foley Piscataway facility is utilized for the storage, sale and routine maintenance of a full range of Caterpillar construction equipment, engines and generators. On March 1, 2010, an excavator, located on the exterior gravel parking area, had a leaking fuel line which resulted in a release of approximately 40 gallons of diesel fuel to the gravel parking area. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) was notified of the release and case #10-03-01-1100-46 was assigned to the incident. Subsequently, 193 tons of impacted soil was excavated and disposed of at a licensed facility. At the completion of the soil excavation efforts, confirmatory post-excavation soil sampling was completed by JMS. Analytical results for the post-excavation soil samples were all below the strictest New Jersey soil standards.

A baseline ecological evaluation was also completed for the facility, pursuant to the requirements of N.J.A.C. 7:26E-3.11. The tasks completed included the required site inspection and an evaluation of the potential for adverse impacts to environmentally sensitive areas. The impacted soil was removed almost immediately after the release and no evidence of an impact to the sensitive receptors in the area was observed. Therefore, no further ecological investigation was warranted.

Based on the analytical results of the soil samples collected an Unrestricted Use Response Action Outcome (RAO) was issued for the site.
